Variable Message Sign Systems
Roadside signage for traffic guidance, designed, built and deployed across several Turkish cities. The failure mode is a sign nobody can read.

Variable message signs are the gantries and roadside boards that tell drivers about a closed lane, a diversion, or a queue ahead. I worked across the whole span of these systems at ISSD between 2018 and 2020: design, development, and deployment on site.
The engineering problem has less to do with the message than with what the sign has to survive. It sits outdoors for years. Direct sun washes out the display the moment brightness control gets it wrong, and then there are freezing nights, dust, and drivers reading it at speed from a few hundred metres back. It has to stay legible through all of that, and it has to keep doing something sensible when the operations centre it talks to goes quiet.
Deployed in Konya, Bursa, Mersin, Kahramanmaraş and other cities.
